the night guard March 5, 1986

So we've come back to George the night guard, a man is lonely and isolated as any man I've ever met or rather part of that club of men who I often meet and befriend even though I often disagree with their lifestyles and their politics

in general night guards at Willowbrook are not liked by other guards and people close to the mall perhaps this is do to the isolation and the envy of others who see them as something special or perhaps is something within the guard himself who is drawn to such duties

I don't remember whether Gene was hated but Chuck was and his replacement Dan as well as Billy and Joe and John and this man George
In George's case it is love of power--  not flagrant power abuse like most guards get into--  but a deep seriousness about the uniform and the job that causes him to perform acts of aggression against those he believes unfit to inhabit the same uniform

according to others in the night crew his partner and other people,  George has successfully reported every guard with whom he has come into contact and some who he has never seen

of course there is an exaggeration too

though George's desire to have a gun here tends to shake me as well knowing that power hunger and weapons often mean more trouble than I care to witness, his natural desire for power makes him side with power even when such siding are often obviously wrong

for instance last night we discussed the issue of Bernard the day Baker and how Clara Jean has controlled his verbal exes, usually with disrespect by cutting his hours down in the guise of being fair

George claimed that she was correct

managers in general need to establish their authority but he wasn't being fair

George not only has great affection for Clara Jean but bases his total judgment upon authority is right

he did not know for instance of Phil desire to strip Bernard of high per hour wage because Bernard is black

failing this it's is easier to cut his hours

George does not see Clara Jean limitations as a manager or a human being and this failing creates a failure in judgment

last night George claimed repeatedly that he was being impartial and unbiased and his failing to see his own slanted view as everyone has makes any form of fairness impossible meanwhile his insistence on setting standards in Willowbrook has caused real problems not only or the other guards siding with people

George has offended many it seems and many are waiting to take a crack at him

No wonder George wants to carry a gun

that thing with police has backfire too with Pete a local asshole cop waiting for his chance and management having doubts about the reliability of a guard that offends local police

the boss apparently has questioned people about how easy or hard it is to work with George as if George's time was coming to an end all agree that if he acts this way when he becomes a cop he's a dead man
